Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. -Dr. Seuss I taught special education at the elementary level for 5 years. During that time, one of my favorite ways to address behaviors was through read alouds and picture books. Each morning, I had "morning meeting" with my students, and I would often choose a book related to challenging behaviors that had been frequently/recently exhibited. Teaching social skills is not limited to the special education classroom. All students struggle at some point with making the right choices and navigating social expectations {my child included}. There are a multitude of benefits to reading aloud to your students, and how much better to include books that specifically address challenging behaviors! I believe that reading these books with my students is one thing I will miss most about the elementary setting. I recently stumbled across an Instagram post by Shelly Becker advertising her book Even Superheroes Have Bad Days and knew I just had to have it for my own kiddo. Since I love books that teach social skills so much, I decided to share some of my favorites from my elementary years with you. {Links to Amazon included} Whole Body Listening Larry At School by Elizabeth Sautter Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal: A Tale of Tattletales by Jeanie Franz Ransom A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue by Julia Cook The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook What If Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick I Just Don't Like the Sound of No! by Julia Cook The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister Creative Teaching Press Character Education Readers Some of these may be familiar titles, but hopefully there are a few new ones you can add to your collection.
